It is a common observation that every writer has needs. Dozens of them. Maybe even hundreds. They need much more than just somebody to proofread or edit. There are so many needs, in fact, that I am beginning to believe that this is the main reason most people don’t make their livings as writers.
This is where you have hit the jackpot. Not in that you have everything you need. Mercy, no! I might even say that you may never have everything you need. It may be necessary to simply make do with what you have. You may be doing the equivalent of “walking uphill both ways to school in the snow.”
No, diligent writer, you have hit the jackpot with something much more valuable: tenacity. You probably are well-aware of all the things that you want, and cringe at all the things, both tangible and intangible, that you need: More ibuprofen. More coffee. More sleep. Less noise. A vacation. A cat that stays off your keyboard when you’re trying to write. A dog that isn’t so needy. (Just what does that dog think he needs so much, anyway? He’s not a writer.)
Some things you need seem to be unattainable. Answers to the Big Questions in life. Better questions, for that matter. It would be nice if the one question that goes through your head would just go away: should you really even be attempting to become a writer at all?
Yet, you still pursue your calling: to write, no matter how much there is to do, to learn, to grasp.
After all, what else is there for you, other than the voices in your head, and the pen to bring them to life?
This blog will help us share a little journey through the confusion and hardships that plague writers. And if there is only one answer that you can glean from these words, it is this:
The toil is worth it.
